School Improvement Council (SIC)
Minutes of Meeting held Tuesday, October 18, 2022
Attendees: C. Browne, S. Shipsey, R. James, M. Smith, P. Simmons-Hills, J. Chatman-Jenkins, T. Hall, A. Patel
Meeting began at 6:05PM: C. Browne opened meeting. Introductions by all attendees followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Moment of silence was observed for David Striebinger – BCSD board member, Alice Wright – former LIMS AP and Jeff Briggs – former teacher in the BCSD system. All three died this week.
S. Shipsey gave the Chair Report:
· S. Shipsey stated that our SIC membership is compliant. Membership document will be uploaded to the state SIC website. Ruth James will serve as SIC secretary.
· Discussion continued concerning the new access road into LIMS. The funding from the project comes from the 2018 Penny Tax referendum. Work designated to begin in 2023 with a community meeting held at LIMS by all concerned parties to update plans in the coming months.
· LIMS continues with their outreach into the community. Students will be present at November 18, 2022 Rotary of the Lowcountry meeting to showcase our school’s arts program. Planning is underway for LIMS student participation at the Lady’s Island Business and Professional Association (LIBPA) meeting.
C. Browne shared the Principal’s Report:
· C. Browne began her report with Celebrations. Congratulations to Marta Smith and committee with the success of this fall’s fundraiser – Color Run. To date the fundraiser has raised over $16,000 – shattering expectations. A spring fundraiser will be planned.
· C. Browne stated that this year’s enrollment is presently at 434 students. We ended last year with 515 students. Online schooling is a factor concerning the lower numbers.
· LIMS is proud to have five international teachers this year.
· C. Browne mentioned that at this week’s principals meeting BCSD superintendent Dr. Rodriquez stated a school referendum would be on the November 2023 ballot. A new Lady’s Island Middle School will be an item on the referendum. A committee is being developed to oversee the referendum initiative.
· C. Browne discussed our school report card below average grade. She stated that it is the first report card since 2019. We missed scoring average by a percentage point. Methods and strategies are taking place to rank us in the Good/Excellent category next year.
· Our marching band program has 90 students – 1/5th of our school population. Plans are underway for the band to perform at the Veteran’s, Heritage and Christmas Days parades.
· Our winter sports program is up and running! Cheerleading, basketball, and wrestling tryouts are underway.
Open Discussion:
· T. Hall commented that she liked the way our open house was organized. Possibly a second look at the viability of the Back to School event. One event may cover all needs for parents, students, and teachers.
· The council discussed ideas for our school goals for 2022-23. We decided on two goals. Develop effective parent engagement programs. A. Patel recommended that road improvement on Cougar Drive be a goal. Both goals were approved by SIC council.
· Next SIC meeting: November 15, 2022 @ 6pm in the library.
Meeting adjourned at 7:30PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Scott Shipsey
